INTIMATE GLIMPSES

INTIMATE GLIMPSES features some 40 images by documentary photographer EFFY ALEXAKIS. The photographs are part of a long term project, which has been documenting Greek - Australians since 1982. Titled, IN THEIR OWN IMAGE: GREEK AUSTRALIANS, the project has created and toured exhibitions both nationally and internationally, published two major books, produced various articles, and has been the subject of a film documentary.
Featuring historical and contemporary photographs, Alexakis' images for Intimate Glimpses celebrate the significant presence and influence, which Greeks have had on Australian history and culture, and covers issues such as identity, migration, remigration, settlement, work and generational development.
Each photograph in the exhibition has been sensitively and succinctly captioned by social historian Leonard Janiszewski - Alexakis' collaborator in her on-going project - which further engages the viewer with the subject.
