A collection of seminal films portraying Greek Australian characters and stories in the revival period of the Australian film industry. They also point to the growing participation of Greek Australians in the key creative processes of film making in Australia in the last three decades and chart a development in the area of cinematic representation of minority cultural identity.
Michael Karris's A Face of Greekness is a short drama that highlights
the issues of shame, dishonour and blame that arise after a young Greek
girl is raped. The film brilliantly emphasises the cultural issues experienced
by migrants in a working class Melbourne suburb. Ana Kokkinos's austere and unsentimental black and white film Antamosi,
reunites a mother and daughter after 18 years. The traumas of war and
migration have taken their toll and memories and secrets of the past rekindle
deep conflicts between them. When the truth about the dead father is revealed
it is left to the grand daughter to facilitate a symbolic reconciliation.
Tom Cowan's Promised Woman is a groundbreaking feature film that
follows the journey of Antigone. She is the prospective bride in an arranged
marriage who arrives in Sydney only to be rejected by her proposed groom,
Tellis, who was expecting a younger woman. Antigone refuses to return
home and resolves to fight to control her own destiny.
