Join us at the 2006 Greek Film Festival of Canberra

12 – 18 October 2006
Electric Shadows Cinemas,
City Walk Canberra City

The Greek Film Festival Association of Canberra is proud to announce that the 2006 Greek Film Festival of Canberra will be taking place from the 12-18 October at Electric Shadows Cinemas.

In its fourth year running, the Greek Film Festival of Canberra has left a mark on the local film scene offering an eclectic array of contemporary Greek cinema as well as the much loved Classics from Greece.

The celebration continues in 2006 with an extended line up of fresh new films promising a vivid exhibition capturing the spirited psyche inherent in contemporary Greek culture today. Audiences are sure to enjoy the stunning cinematography and exquisite music soundtracks that complement some very fine and robust acting.

The 2006 festival will be officially opened by the Ambassador of Greece, His Excellency Mr. George Zois on 12 October. The opening night screening will be followed by the official cocktail party at Babar’s Café where film viewers can enjoy Mediterranean mezze, wine and live Greek entertainment.

This year’s program will open with the comical “Chariton’s Choir" (I Horodia tou Charitona) directed by Grigoris Karantinakis and starring Greek superstar George Corraface. Awarded the Audience vote at the 46th International Thessaloniki Film Festival, Chariton’s Choir tells of the passions of life when the free thinking bohemian school Principle takes on the autocracy in a provincial town in the spring of 1968.

Sequel to Nikos Perakis’s multi-award winning “Loathing and Camouflage”, the festival will also feature the new block buster “Sirens in the Aegean”, a comical send up of Greek mandatory military service portrayed in the midst of an international diplomatic situation.

A highlight of the program will be the screening of the long awaited classical tragedies "Electra", "The Trojan Women" and "Iphigenia” by the Cannes Film Festival award-winning director Michael Cacoyannis.

Finally, this year’s festival will be extended to include a selection of award winning children’s films. Families will be able enjoy the touching dramas of “The Flea”, “The Canary Bicycle” and “Fading Light”.

The national festival will be traveling to Melbourne (September 20th- October 8th), Adelaide (September 28th – October 2nd), Canberra (October 12th-18th) and Brisbane (October 19th-22nd).
