The 2006 Greek Film Festival features three dramas by Euripides adapted for
the cinema by Michael Cacoyannis: Electra (1962), The Trojan women (1971)
and Iphigenia (1977).
A contemporary of the philosopher Socrates, Euripides is the most "modern"
of the great playwrights of ancient Athens. Through his treatment of
traditional myths, he questioned the values on which his society was based.
In many of his finest and most famous works, the focus is on women.
